Measuring and Estimating

Philip Walton's offers all its customers the services of our sales and estimating team free of charge. There is no obligation on your part and we will not contact you to follow up on a quote unless we are specifically asked by yourself to make contact.

Should you choose to measure the area yourself we have detailed below some guidelines to help. Please bear in mind we cannot guarantee the accuracy of any measurement you make yourself.

  • It is better to slightly over-estimate the sizes of your room(s)
  • As building houses is not an exact science, rooms can be several inches out of ‘Square’, so please check your measurements at several points across the room width and breadth.
  • Look along the line of the wall to see if there are any deviations – these may not be apparent when standing in the middle of the room
  • Never rely on the architect’s plans if you have a new property – always physically measure the rooms
  • If you are carpeting several rooms or some rooms have complex shapes, it’s probably best to let us do the measuring – we may see things that allow us to optimize any wastage by recommending, for example, an alternative width carpet.

If you are shopping around and comparing different offers please beware of so called ‘silly prices’. It’s the final complete total estimate with no hidden extras that really matters.

Finally don’t be afraid to ask – give us a call and we will be happy to help

Fitting

There is a saying that “a carpet fitted by a plumber will look like a carpet fitted by a plumber”. Always use a professional carpet fitter. As part of our standard fitting service, we will organize the delivery of your carpet to your home and co-ordinate the services of our recommended carpet fitter.

  • If possible completely clear the room to be fitted or at very least remove all the ornaments and small items of furniture.
  • If you cannot remove large items of furniture or uplift your current carpet please let us know. We can normally arrange for this additional work to be undertaken for a small charge
  • Ask our salesperson to clarify what is included in our standard fitting service and which items may be extra.
  • The condition of your floors can also seriously affect carpet performance. It isn’t always possible to fully assess the condition of the sub-floor during the initial measure and there are instances where problems occur once the old floor covering has been removed. Please help us by advising of known or potential problems during the time when our estimator is at site.
  • Never let another tradesperson tamper with your carpet once it is fitted
  • If you are in any doubt about our fitting service please ask us.

Underlay

Underlay is as important as the carpet itself. The golden rule is invest in the best you can afford and here are some reasons why:

  • Good quality underlay gives extra resilience to your carpet and can extend the life of a carpet by 30%.
  • Underlay makes your carpet feel more luxurious.
  • Waffle type underlay increases airflow which assists the operation of your vacuum cleaner.
  • Underlay acts as a thermal insulator, reducing downward heat loss by up to 50%..
  • Underlay helps reduce noise transmission through wooden floors.
  • If you are replacing carpet that is more than 2 years old, it is normal practice to replace the underlay.
  • Old underlay is as worn as a tired old carpet.
  • Some carpets have a combined underlay. These are generally less expensive and used for areas that experience occasional use only.
  • Remember ‘Foam Backs’ will require a suitable interliner to stop foam foam sticking to the floor.
  • NEVER LAY CARPET ONTOP OF ANOTHER CARPET.
